Ball Lab: Free Dribble

Set up

Field
Create a dribbling area that fits the size of the group; for 12-16 players, a 20x20 yard grid is a useful starting point. Scatter cones throughout the space as obstacles and visual reference points. Leave enough room for players to move freely while still making the area crowded enough to demand awareness. Make the grid smaller for more advanced groups or larger for beginners.
Players
4 or more players. Players begin anywhere inside the grid with a ball at their feet.
Balls
Give every player a ball.

How it runs

  1. 1.Dribble freely through the area and use different surfaces of the feet as you move.
  2. 2.Stay in motion and keep the ball close enough to remain under control.
  3. 3.Mix in touches with the inside, outside, sole, and laces.
  4. 4.Turn often and use different techniques to change direction.
  5. 5.Change pace throughout the activity, including short bursts of acceleration.
  6. 6.Treat the scattered cones like defenders that must be dribbled around or avoided.
  7. 7.Look up whenever possible so you can see open space and the players around you.
  8. 8.Try moves, feints, and tricks without worrying about mistakes.
  9. 9.Make a conscious effort to use both feet throughout the session.
  10. 10.Continue for 5-10 minutes or use the activity as part of the warmup.
